Will Ubuntu Become Bigger Than Linux?

Now don’t get all crazy on me. I’m not insinuating that Ubuntu isn’t Linux nor am I saying it is the only distro out there that is worth a look. With that said, it does seem that Ubuntu is becoming a name that may become as recognizable as Linux it self. This is definitely a good thing for Ubuntu but may end up being a confusing and frustrating issue for Linux users. While it’s clear that OS X is built on Unix no one calls OS X Unix. Will Ubuntu end up with the same fate? Will Ubuntu be seen as it’s own OS all together rather than a Linux based system to those that use it?

Ubuntu has really taken the Linux scene by storm. I myself used to be an OpenSuse Linux user. I used Windows the majority of the time while using Suse. I barely use Windows anymore. While it’s clear that Linux my never become a household name there is no reason Ubuntu cannot do that. For Linux, Ubuntu can be what OS X has become for Unix. The popularity of Ubuntu will only further promote widespread use of Linux. It’s a win-win.

Ubuntu != Linux

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

They said exactly the same thing about Red Hat 10 years ago and look at the Linux landscape now.
