TOR was available in a PPA for Ubuntu which has been deleted. There is also an official TOR Ubuntu repository which unfortunately has also not been updated for Maverick, just like the repositories I mentioned above. But the Lucid packages work just fine - I'm running it on Maverick for a month now and everything works.
Some GIT servers support the http protocol but some don't and if you're behind a firewall like me (at work - so I don't have control over it and most ports are blocked) you basically can't access GIT.
