The gnome main menu applet was created as another effort for people to try and use awn and get rid of all their gnome bars. Well as another stride in this direction more has been added to this applet.

So I keep hearing all these great improvements coming down the pipe for KDE and v4.0.  I know much of it is available in the repositories and while considered beta at this stage when have I been afraid of a little bleeding edge?

Now that I am using Gutsy and a Ubuntu based wallpaper background, I thought I would make a Ubuntu theme for awn and share it with all of you.

Some time ago I saw this post about a super horizontal/vertical resize algorithm which preserves the proportions of what is important on an image. Yesterday I was reading unread posts on Planet Ubuntu when I saw this post of Jorge Bernal where he says that already exists a plugin for GIMP of this algorithm (this is why I love free software).

In my last article, I said that musikCube had support for Last.fm through a plugin. You might be wondering what is Last.fm, even if you jumped quickly to their frontpage.Last.fm is, to quote them:

The idea is floating around again: Let's make a special Linux distribution for women! We're smarter than that, aren't we? I say, let's spare ourselves and the world yet another pointless and less-than-useful version of Linux.

Are you a crafter of icons, sounds, backgrounds and splash screens, or even window manager themes? Selecting the right license for your artwork to coexist with free software is no trivial task. Creative Commons (CC) and Free Software Foundation (FSF) licenses each have their advantages, but they are mutually incompatible. The two groups are beginning to move toward simplifying the situation, but in the meantime there are several things you can do to make license compatibility easier.

In this screencast we look at updating the system with packages from Ubuntu repositories and upgrading systems from one release to another. We show:-

• Using Software Properties/Sources to identify repositories in use
• Updating packages on an Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper) system
• Upgrading from Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper) to 6.10 (Edgy) using Update Manager

My good friend Daniel asked me yesterday how to change Firefox so that Shift+Enter auto-completes *.org instead of *.net. After about a 2 minute google session, I had the answer to share with everybody.

Songbird is a cross-platform, Mozilla-based music player with high ambitions. The app is still undergoing heavy development, but it has come a long way since we looked at the 0.1 release in 2006. Songbird today can sing a pretty sweet tune, but to push its way into the big leagues, it needs to get over its own interface.

This HOWTO will describe how to install uTorrent on your Debian Linux desktop using wine and how to get a more suitable tray icon using alltray.

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix. µTorrent is a lightweight and efficient BitTorrent client for Windows with many features.

First of all we need to add a new repo for this you need to edit the sources.list file:

Take a niche operating system. Put it in the spotlight vs. Microsoft’s disappointing Windows Vista. Hype the niche operating system for a few months. Win a business deal with Dell. And at some point all that wonderful buzz will produce expectations that you can’t meet. Such is the case, apparently, with Ubuntu.
